A Magnificent Tree

The other day on my personal FB page I posted a photo of this beautiful magnolia that is in my neighbor’s yard. Everyone agreed it was a beautiful tree. Not everyone agreed it was a magnolia. I live in the south and magnolias are a popular breed but they are not typically pink in the spring.

…and the debate began. Magnolia, Crabapple, Purple Plum?

it’s pink – it can’t be a magnolia
beautiful – not quite a magnolia.
That’s a flowering plum tree…

We became a bit adamant in our opinions about this tree (I more so than the rest, I admit). More pictures popped up, more opinions.

Even a little joking about me being from the north – what do I know about “southern” trees”?

Looks more like a crabapple to me. Magnolias have large, dark green leaves and large white flowers. Gotta get you “Southernized” girl.

An expert was called in for an opinion – and even he was not quite sure at first. Turns out it’s a rare beauty, that tree.

The pink tree? Looks like flowering crab to me. Also Okame cherries look similar and are blooming now

A debate about a tree. A tree.  Not guns, not politics…a tree.

As a friend said, what a nice change it was.

From my heart to yours, Diane

(and I still stand by the fact that it is a MAGNOLIA – a beautiful pink flowering Japanese Magnolia!) 😉

  1. Very interesting! Your friend is right; a very nice change. If this was about politics I may have stopped half way (Maybe). It’s a beautiful tree, no matter what it is! Magnificent indeed!
