If You Teach a Child

It is only by doing something positive that something positive will happen. Bitter words on a page, voices raised in anger or frustration, windows smashed, cars burned. The only thing that will be different in the morning will be that the anger, the frustration and the depression will be stronger.

If instead, you teach a child the history of this country so that children will know how hard people have worked for the freedoms we take for granted today, you are doing something positive.

If instead, you teach a child about our democratic political system and why it was created and how it is supposed to work, then you are doing something positive.

If instead, you teach a child that all beings are equal – all beings have value, you are doing something positive.

If instead, you teach a child to grow food, cook a meal, read a book, ride a bike, hike a mountain, write a letter, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child how to balance a budget, save a dollar, donate to a cause, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child to work shoulder to shoulder with people to complete a project, to not give up or give in, to ask others opinion and ask questions, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child to listen without thinking of a reply, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child to pray, to meditate, to live with God and not in fear of God, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child to say ‘I love you’ often and ‘I forgive you’ more, you are doing something positive.

If you teach a child, you make a difference.

And to my children, stay positive, stay focused. Teach the children in your lives the things we neglected to teach you. Let the next generation get it right.

From my heart to yours,  Diane
